How We Make Your Custom Metal Speaker Grilles – Our 4-Step Process
Custom Raw Material Sourcing
We start by ordering non-standard steel coils – thickness and width are customized to your drawing, not off-the-shelf. Available in aluminum, steel, and stainless steel.
Perforating / Punching
The coils are fed into our high-speed stamping presses to create custom hole patterns – any size, any spacing, any shape (round, square, hex, or decorative). Precision perforated metal for optimal sound transparency.
Stamping & Forming
After perforating, the flat sheet is stamped and formed into your desired shape – round, square, rectangular, or complex contours. Tight tolerances, clean edges, no burrs.
Surface Finishing – Powder Coating
Finally, every grille receives a durable powder coating (black, white, or any RAL color). We also offer e‑coating, electroplating, polishing, and brushing.

Frequently Asked Questions – Custom Metal Speaker Grilles
How do I find a reliable speaker grille manufacturer, supplier, or factory in China?
When sourcing custom metal speaker grilles, here’s the difference:
Manufacturer / Factory – Physically produces grilles using stamping, perforating, and powder coating. Direct pricing, full quality control, no middleman. Jetray is a manufacturer – we own our stamping presses, tooling shop, and finishing line.
Supplier – Could be a manufacturer OR a trading company. Trading companies resell from multiple factories – often higher prices, less transparency.
Company – A generic term. Always verify if they are a factory or a trader before committing.
Why work directly with a manufacturer like Jetray?
Direct pricing – no middleman markup
Full control – we own tooling, production, finishing
No MOQ – from 1 piece to 10,000+
20+ years – only metal speaker grilles
What hole patterns are available for perforated speaker grilles?
We manufacture custom hole patterns based on your drawing. Common options include:
Round holes – most common, good balance of strength and sound transparency
Square or hex holes – decorative designs, often used for high-end or vintage-style grilles
Slot holes – for directional sound or aesthetic purposes
You control the hole diameter (from 0.5mm to 10mm+), hole spacing (pitch), and open area ratio (typically 30% to 70%). For reference, some professional PA speakers use a 63% open area for optimal sound transmission. We do not stock “standard” patterns – every batch is made to your specification.
Does a perforated metal grill affect sound quality?
A properly designed perforated metal grill has minimal impact on sound. The key factor is open area ratio – the percentage of the grill surface that is open holes. Industry practice suggests that an open area of 40% or more is considered “acoustically transparent”.
However, from a manufacturing perspective, there are practical limits you should know:
Hole diameter should be at least 2x material thickness – For example, if you use 1.0mm thick steel, the minimum hole diameter is 2.0mm. Smaller holes (e.g., 1.2mm holes on 1.0mm material) will break punching pins and increase tooling wear.
Small holes cause powder coating issues – If holes are too small, powder coating will bridge over the holes during spraying, blocking them partially or completely. This affects both appearance and sound transparency. Larger holes allow powder to flow through, keeping the mesh clean and open.
Recommendation for best results – We typically suggest hole diameter ≥ 1.5mm for painted/powder coated grilles. If you need a “fine mesh” look, consider chemical etching instead of stamping – etching can produce smaller holes without the same tooling and coating limitations.
We can help you select the right hole size, material thickness, and open area ratio based on your speaker design and finish requirements. Send us your drawing – we’ll advise on what works best for both acoustics and manufacturability.
What is metal speaker grill mesh?
Metal speaker grill mesh is a protective cover for speakers – but there’s no single “standard” type. It can be made by:
Stamping / Perforating – high volume, large holes (≥1.5mm)
Chemical etching – fine mesh, small holes, complex patterns
CNC / Laser – small batches, odd shapes, thick materials
Wire EDM / Turret punching – special cases for precision or mid-volume
Each process has different cost, lead time, and design limitations. Send us your drawing – we’ll tell you which process fits best.
